Check Water Pressure

With Eagle Mountain homes at various elevations, there are different water pressures throughout the city. Residential Pressure Reducing Valves (PRVs) regulate a constant safe operating pressure within the home. The hard water in Eagle Mountain affects their lifespan and effectiveness, so they need to be checked and adjusted or replaced as needed.

Freezing Pipes

When freezing temperatures occur, frozen water pipes in your home are an inconvenient and often costly possibility. Here is some information we hope will be helpful in your efforts to prevent pipes from freezing:

Ways to Prevent Frozen Pipes in Your Home:

During freezing weather keep your thermostat at 55 degrees or higher, even when you are not at home.
Insulate pipes and faucets on the outside walls of your home or in unheated area.
When the outside temperature is below freezing, open cabinet doors inside your house under the sinks to allow warm air to circulate near water pipes.
During extreme outside weather, allow inside faucets to run at a slow trickle (about a pencil lead’s width). Keep in mind this will increase the water usage on your utility bill.
Know exactly where to locate your water shut-off valve in case you need to shut off the water immediately.

What to do if your pipes freeze:

If you turn on water in cold temperatures and no water comes out, they may be frozen
Open the cold water faucet nearest the freeze to reduce pressure in the pipes and lessen the risk of breakage.
Locate the frozen pipe and use a hair dryer on low setting to distribute heat evenly along the pipe. Heating the pipe too rapidly could cause the pipe to burst. Caution: Never use an electrical appliance near water due to the risk of electrocution.
NEVER use an open flame to unthaw pipes. It could cause a fire and may also heat the pipe too rapidly causing the pipe to burst.
If you cannot locate a frozen pipe, call the EM City Emergency hotline at 801-789-5959, option 3 (water department). We are happy to help determine if the line is frozen in your service line or meter box.
If the line is frozen on your side of the meter box, a plumber may be needed.
