SR 73 State Environmental Study Update

Eagle Mountain’s growth requires transportation needs to be continually assessed. Currently many projects are in process, including the S.R. 73 State Environmental Study (SES), being conducted by the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT). The study is necessary to assess the area and determine a road concept that can accommodate future traffic needs, preserve land and have the fewest impacts to the community. UDOT has coordinated closely with city staff on the design.

Here’s a look at the study’s upcoming milestones:

• Summer 2018 – Draft SES
o Release a draft of the refined alignment with anticipated property impacts 
o Hold a public hearing and formal public comment period

• Fall 2018 – Final SES 
o Modify the Draft SES where applicable and reply to comments on the Draft
o Release Final SES document


UDOT is halfway through the study and the study team has posted a preliminary alignment map for informational purposes. The draft alignment map can be found on the study website. While the alignment is subject to change as the study team continues its in-depth environmental analysis, the draft map helps us better visualize the configuration. It also gives us time to process the information and formulate questions and comments ahead of the formal public comment period this summer. 

This draft alignment would impact some Eagle Mountain property owners. We understand there will be questions and concerns related to this. Following is information about property impacts and the property acquisition process. 

While currently no funding has been identified, Mountainland Association of Governments’ (MAG) Regional Transportation Plan identifies the need for this project by 2024. This would likely include both the freeway widening and construction of the frontage roads. However, without funding UDOT cannot begin the official property acquisition process. 

That said, if directly affected property owners would like UDOT to purchase their property before funding is allocated and construction is set to begin, they may appeal to UDOT and the Utah Transportation Commission through the corridor preservation process. 

UDOT considers corridor preservation appeals on a case-by-case basis. Also, it is important to note that relocation benefits are not available as part of the corridor preservation process. Click here for more information and eligibility requirements.
